MYTH: Hospice means I am going to die soon

MYTH: You cannot keep your own doctor if you enter a hospice program

FACT: Not necessarily. Studies show exactly the opposite. Although hospice care neither hastens death nor prolongs life, patients with certain illnesses live somewhat longer with hospice care than those with the same illness who do not choose hospice care. Regardless of the illness, patient/family satisfaction with services received are consistently higher when hospice is involved.

FACT: Your family doctor or specialist is encouraged to remain engaged in your care. The hospice physician works closely with your doctor who knows you better (medically) than anyone else to determine the specific medical needs that will be addressed in your plan of care.

MYTH: Hospice care is only for people who have given up on life

FACT: It is a common misconception that hospice is about dying when in reality, it is designed to help terminally ill patients live their final days to the fullest. 

MYTH: Once you choose hospice care there is no turning back

MYTH: Only patients with cancer can benefit from hospice care

MYTH: Hospice care is only for people who have given up on life

FACT: You are free to leave a hospice program at any time for any reason without penalty and can re-enroll if medically eligible for the program.

 FACT: According to a 2020 report nearly 70% of hospice care patients were admitted with a non-cancer primary diagnosis. This is by no means a majority. 

MYTH: Hospice care is expensive

MYTH: Only patients with cancer can benefit from hospice care

FACT: Hospice care is a benefit fully funded by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurances.
